This new UNESCO fact sheet on girls’ education summarizes the progress achieved in the past 25 years. In low-income countries, enrolment rates for girls in primary and secondary education have almost doubled and the gender gap in primary enroment has been reduced by half. However, the pace of change is not fast enough.

According to this UNICEF report, girls around the world face a high risk of violence at home, school, in their communities, and online. The physical, psychological, and social consequences "continue to disrupt and damage the lives and potential of millions of girls around the world."

The World Inequality Database in Education (WIDE) shows that young women do not complete secondary school in as many as 10 countries, many in Sub-Saharan Africa. This is a result of a variety of factors, including child labour, child marriage, early pregnancy, discrimination, and other barriers that prevent girls from safely accessing education.

The Global Programme to End Child Marriage was launched in 2016. Its goal was to end child marriage by 2030. Since its launch, the program has helped over 8 million adolescent girls and provided more than 5 million community members with information, skills, and services. According to UNICEF and the UN Population Fund, the program will be renewed for additional three years.

The President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago reflects on how far the world still has to go to be gender equal: "Removing the barriers that hinder gender equality requires us to look beyond gender parity in education. Merely counting girls in classrooms can obscure the multi-dimensional barriers to girls’ empowerment in and through education."

It argues that the system is characterized by inequalities and chronic underperformance that are not being addressed by the current government.

This Human Rights Watch report explores the stigma and discrimination faced by LGBT students in Vietnam. Based on in-depth interviews with 52 LGBT youth, teachers, and school staff, the report documents verbal harrassment, bullying, and physical violence, and states that teachers are not well prepared to address anti-LGBT discrimination. |

UIS Releases More Timely Country-Level Data for SDG 4 on Education |

The UNESCO Institute for Statistics recently updated some of the SDG indicators with more timely and country-level data. This release includes updates to indicators on learning outcomes (4.1.1), learning assessment (4.1.2), and functional literacy (4.6.1), as well as new data on early childhood and post-secondary education.
